My Top 10 books of 2014

2014 was a great reading year for me. I read 35 books in total and below I will present you my most favorite books of 2014. (Reviews are up as well for most of the books)

1. Forbidden (Tabitha Suzuma)
   My most favorite book of all time. A great and touching story and relatable characters. Just perfect.
   
   
   
2. The Infernal Devices {all books} (Cassandra Clare)
   I loved the whole series, but especially Clockwork Princess. A wonderful series with amazing characters and a very sad but wonderful ending.
   
   
   
3. The Spook’s Mistake (Joseph Delaney)
   The 5^th book of my favorite series of all time. It was scary and action-packed. Definitely a highlight for me this year.
   
   
   
4. City of Lost Souls (Cassandra Clare)
   I read most of the book in the TMI series in 2014, but I loved CoLS the most. We get to see so much more of Sebastian in this books, and he is (as you know) my favorite character of all time.
   
5. Obsidian & Onyx (Jennifer L. Armentrout)
   I couldn’t decide between these two. I loved both equally. The series is perfect and the author is just brilliant. Definitely worth a read.
   
   
   
6. Will Grayson, Will Grayson (John Green; David Levithan)
   I read this book during a very difficult time in my life, and this book cheered me up again. I just love the humor in it and also the characters.
   
   
   
7. The 5^th Wave (Rick Yancey)
   It was my first alien book, and it was amazing. It was action-packed, fast-paced and just in general a really great book. I can’t wait for the next books in the series!
   
   
   
8. Anna and the French Kiss (Stephenie Perkins)
   Although I’m usually not a huge fan of romance-books, this book was amazing. A little bit cheesy at some points, but also very romantic and funny.
   
   
   
9. The Iron Trial (Cassandra Clare, Holly Black)
   The plot-twist at the end of this book is just amazing. Although the book starts off a little slow, it still is a really great book. I loved the ending!
   
   
   
10. Half Bad (Sally Green)
    This book definitely surprised me. I wasn’t expecting much of it, but it was so unique and also the characters were so great. I’m glad that I picked this book up!

Movie Review: The Hobbit – The battle of the five armies

“One day I'll remember. Remember everything that happened: the good, the bad, those who survived... and those that did not.” 

Content:

After the Dragon leaves the castle, the people of lake town see a threat coming, the orcs, dwarves, elves and people prepare for war. Bilbo sees Thorin going mad and tries helping everyone. Meanwhile, Gandalf still needs to break out of the orc prison.

My opinion:

First of all: A lot of people seem to hate this movie for various reasons. I really don’t understand what all the arguing is about.
I absolutely loved the movie! It was emotional and very action packed. I love how the characters were portrayed in this movie, too. Due to the fact that the book has been split into three parts, the character were able to get more screen-time than they actually did in the book. Thus, we see more people than just the protagonists all the time.
One thing that also has been criticized a lot was the battle itself, because it apparently was “too long”. But let me ask you this: What do you expect from a movie that is called “The BATTLE of the five armies”? The title actually already says that the focus of the movie is going to be on the battle itself and not other things. I really loved it how they filmed the fights, because in the book you don’t really see much of it. In the movie though, you are in the middle of the whole action, which is amazing and exciting.
However, the argument that they put too much into the movie, which wasn’t in the book, is actually invalid. They did that in the first two movies too, and nobody ever complained about it that time. Furthermore, two other books from J.R.R. Tolkien were included too, and thus the audience gets too see a little bit more of the back story of everything.
Looking at the movie now, even if you have read the book, it was amazing what they did with it. In my opinion, it really isn’t disturbing at all that they put some content from other books and also LOTR into the film. For me, as an old fan, it was an amazing and very emotional ending to the series, and I am thankful that Peter Jackson made such amazing movies, which do justice the amazing masterpieces written by J.R.R. Tolkien.

Conclusion:

An action-packed and emotional finale of the trilogy. I absolutely loved every single bit of it.

'Tis The Season Book Tag

Since today it’s Christmas Eve I thought I would do another Book Tag, which will be the last one for this year! Today I chose to do the “’Tis The Season Book Tag”.

Let’s start with the questions! :)

1. Do you have a favorite Winter read?

Usually I read romaces in this season, but this year things were a little different due to school (yeah…). But any good love story will do during winter!

2. Find a book with blue on the cover!

For this I’m going with Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare. I love this book so much, if you haven’t read it yet you should definitely check this series out!

3. Find a book you’d use as the star on a Christmas tree? 

I think I might pick The 5^th Wave for this one. It gold  and shiny and in general a really nice book over!

4. Pick one fictional place that would be perfect for a Winter vacation!

Although there is no “Winter” in Middle Earth, I would ALWAYS want to go there. It’s my most favorite fantasy-world destination of all time.

5. Pick one fictional character you’d take with you on your Winter vacation! 

Picking only one is really hard. I would probably choose Augustus Waters for that (because Sebastian would be too obvious, right?). He is a really kind and funny character and I would enjoy to spend some time with him!

6. Name one book on your Wishlist this year!

I definitely want to get the Rush of Love series by Abbi Glines! (please Santa?)

7. Favorite Holiday drink, treat, & movie?

I don’t like a lot of “holidays drinks”, but I do really enjoy tea, so I guess I will go with this one.
For treat I will choose holiday cookies, but I love ALL the sweets out there.
I don’t have a specific winter or Christmas-movie that I really like, but I guess Home Alone?

Classic Christmas Cinema Book Tag

Since Christmas is just around the corner, I decided to do another Christmas-themed Book Tag! :)

Anyway, without any further ado, let's get to the questions!

1. Elf- choose a book that puts you in the Christmas mood.

For some reason this is Krabat by Ottfried Preußler for me. I read it every year at Christmas and it’s just so great every single time.

2. It's a Wonderful Life- choose a book with a character who goes through some serious character development.

For this one I’m going with Simon Lewis (The Mortal Instruments). I know that he isn’t the obvious choice here, but I think he fits really well. Whereas in the first book he kind of struggles with this new world that has opened for him, he gets really strong and independent in the further books of the series. I just love him!

3. Christmas Carol- choose a book/series with a character you didn't like at first, but grew to love

Actually I really didn’t like Étienne (Anna and the French Kiss) at first. He was so weird and sometimes he acted really selfish, and stupid. But about halfway through the book he just gets so sweet and kind and loving that you just HAVE TO adore him.

4. Home Alone- choose a book where the parents aren't present and if they are, they aren't such a good influence

I guess I will go with the Obsidian series by Jennifer L. Armentrout for this one. The parents of the Black-siblings aren’t present at all, and also Katys mom kind of is always at work.

5. Frosty the Snowman- Find a book with a snowy cover.

For this question I chose “Let it Snow” by John Green, Maureen Johnson and Lauren Myracle. It really looks amazing.

6. Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer- Choose a protagonist you couldn't help but root for.

I definitely have to choose (the kind of depressed) Will Grayson (Will Grayson, Will Grayson) for that. He was just so adorable at some points, and I really felt so sorry for him. He didn’t deserve anything which had happened to him, and I couldn’t help but root for him.

7. Polar Express- Find a book where characters travel somewhere cold.

The Book Thief I guess? Well, they don’t “travel” somewhere cold in particular, but it’s cold there because of winter so I guess this counts!

8. How the Grinch Stole Christmas- Choose a villain you couldn't help but love.

I think everyone who knows me well exactly knows what I’m going to say now. SEBASTIAN MORGENSTERN. He is my most favorite character of all time, and he will probably be forever.

9. National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation- Choose a character with a goofy sense of humor.

Does Will Herondale count? He is kind of the sarcastic type of guy I guess, but I think he suits anyway.

10. Lifetime/Hallmark movie- Choose a book with the cheesiest romance.

I usually don’t read romance books, but I guess I have to go with “Anna and the French Kiss”. It’s a very cute love story with great characters.

Review: Onyx by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Being connected to Daemon Black sucks...
Thanks to his alien mojo, Daemon's determined to prove what he feels for me is more than a product of our bizarro connection. So I've sworn him off, even though he's running more hot than cold these days. But we've got bigger problems.
Something worse than the Arum has come to town...
The Department of Defense are here. If they ever find out what Daemon can do and that we're linked, I'm a goner. So is he. And there's this new boy in school who's got a secret of his own. He knows what's happened to me and he can help, but to do so, I have to lie to Daemon and stay away from him. Like that's possible. Against all common sense, I'm falling for Daemon. Hard.
But then everything changes... 

Cover:

The girl on the cover really doesn’t look like Katy to me and that’s why I don’t like this cover. Daemon looks alright, but honestly I imagined him to look rather different.

My opinion:

I already loved Obsidian, but this book was just so much better than the first one. The plot was much more interesting and action-packed, but also romantic. A lot of exciting stuff happened, but what kind of annoyed me was, that everything which happened was really predictable. In the middle of the book you can already guess how it is going to end. But nevertheless, I really had fun reading it.
The writing style was, again, amazing. I love the sarcastic and clever voice of the characters. The author really did that well, which brings me to the most important aspect of the book: the characters. They are the main reason why I love these books so much. Especially Daemon was a perfect character in this book. In the book you kind of get an inside-view of Daemon, and this makes him even more adorable. The only one, who annoyed me, was Katy. The things she did were just so stupid and naive sometimes, and the reader knew exactly that this isn’t going to end well. But the last 100 pages the “old” Katy returned, and I really enjoyed the ending.

Conclusion:

A great second book in the series with a beautiful ending. I can’t wait to start the next book.

Review: Starcrossed by Josephine Angelini

Content:

With an ancient curse making them loathe one another, Lucas and Helen have to keep their distance. But sometimes love is stronger than hate, and not even the gods themselves can prevent what will happen ...

Cover:

The cover is really beautiful. The both people portray the protagonists perfectly and the colors are beautiful too. Furthermore, the flashes on the cover have a special meaning in the book, so it's great that they included that in the cover.

My opinion:

At the beginning I had a few problems with the book. I couldn’t cope with the writing style and the story itself and also the characters seemed kind of strange to me, at first. After reading a few more chapters though, I could really get into the story. Chapter for chapter it got more exciting and interesting. After the first 100 pages I also liked the writing-style a bit better and it was easier to read for me. The most interesting and exciting part of the book were the last 100 pages, though. Then the action really started and I read through it in less than an hour. I am very interested in Greek-mythology in general, and thus I read the Percy Jackson books already. The whole concept with the “houses” seemed a lot like Percy Jackson to me at first. But I have never been more wrong. It’s something completely new and unique (not to give away too much). Also the characters were great. I fell in love with the whole Delos family and their character traits.

Conclusion:

It was entertaining, funny and romantic. All in all it was a good first part of the trilogy.

Review: Half Bad by Sally Green

The trick is not to mind. 

Not mind about it hurting. 

Not mind about anything.

Content:

In modern-day England, witches live alongside humans: White witches, who are good; Black witches, who are evil; and sixteen-year-old Nathan, who is both. Nathan’s father is the world’s most powerful and cruel Black witch, and his mother is dead. He is hunted from all sides.

Trapped in a cage, beaten and handcuffed, Nathan must escape before his seventeenth birthday, at which point he will receive three gifts from his father and come into his own as a witch—or else he will die. But how can Nathan find his father when his every action is tracked, when there is no one safe to trust—not even family, not even the girl he loves?

Cover:

Looking at this cover for the first time you actually think that it’s just red dust spread all over the cover. But, is it? Taking a second look you see, that it actually has the shape of a human face. And that’s exactly what I love about this cover. It’s so unique and somehow also scary.

My opinion:

When I started the book, I didn’t know a single thing about it. I haven’t heard anything about it on BookTube and I also didn’t read any Reviews before reading this book. And I can tell you, this is the best thing you can do with this book. Whilst at first it might be a little confusing, you soon get into the story and it immediately gets interesting.  The first few pages are written in second person, which means you basically feel like you are the protagonist himself. In my opinion, there wouldn’t have been a better way to start off this book. What I also absolutely loved about this book was the character development of Nathan. You meet him as a small, insecure boy and he grow up to a strong, intelligent man who exactly knows what he wants. Although a few characters really annoyed me at times, they were all unique, same as the story itself.

Conclusion:

This book is definitely something special. I would recommend it to anyone who is into Fantasy. (14+ though)

Movie Review: Mockingjay Part 1

Movie Review: Mockingjay Part 1

“Strange things did happen here, 

No stranger would it be, 

If we met up at midnight in the hanging tree.”

Content:

Katniss Everdeen, the "girl on fire", has survived, even though her home, District 12 has been destroyed by the capitol. Gale has escaped. Katniss' family is safe. Peeta has been captured, tortured and hijacked by the Capitol. District 13 does exist. There are rebels and there are leaders. A rebellion is unfolding and war is on the brink.
A rebellion against President Snow and the whole Capitol.

My opinion:

I honestly don’t know where to start. This movie was amazing!
To be honest, Mockingjay is my least favorite book of the series, but nevertheless I really enjoy this movie. Catching Fire, as well as Mockingjay Part 1 were directed by Francis Lawrence, and also this time he did an amazing job! They stayed true to the book in almost the entire movie and that’s fantastic. In the movie you get to see more than just Katniss’ point of view, which gives the movie another great feature. Additionally, the effects which they added (especially when the team was on the mission to rescue the Victors) were amazing and really fitted the scenes.
The characters were portrayed perfectly too! Most of them were exactly like I imagined them to be (especially Boggs. He was amazing) I suffered with the characters, I felt excitement, sadness, happiness. Everything was included in the movie.  What also really touched me was, when Katniss (Jennifer) sang the Hanging Tree song. You saw the revolution growing throughout this song, and you saw that the courage of people was rising. They did this scene (and many others) perfectly.

Conclusion:

I’m speechless. A perfect movie, as well as a perfect book-to-movie adaptation.

Review: Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout

“I've always found that the most beautiful people, truly beautiful inside and out, are the ones who are quietly unaware of their effect."

Content:

When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I'd pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring... until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.
And then he opened his mouth.
Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something... unexpected happens. 

Cover:

The cover shows the two main characters of the book, Katy and Daemon. It looks good and I also really like the colors on the cover. They describe the book perfectly.

My opinion:

This book was one of my first Sci-Fi books this year and I am really surprised on how much I liked it. The writing-style of the author is great and the chapters are rather short, which I loved (I’m not a big fan of long chapters). There isn’t much explanation at the beginning and thus the plot quickly gets exciting. The book was interesting and action-packed from the first to the last page. Additionally, the characters were very unique and funny. I loved all of them, although some just got on my nerves with their behavior sometimes. The fact that the protagonist is a book-blogger herself makes me love the book even more. At some points you can really see and feel how important books are for her. Can’t we all indentify ourselves with that? Katy herself is a really great character. She does her own thing and has her own opinion, and also Daemon can’t change anything about that. I love her for that!

Conclusion:

A great first book of the series. Can’t wait to read the next books!

Movie Review: Love, Rosie

Rosie and Alex have been best friends since they were 5, so they couldn't possibly be right for one another...or could they? When it comes to love, life and making the right choices, these two are their own worst enemies. One awkward turn at 18, one missed opportunity...and life sends them hurtling in different directions. But somehow, across time, space and different continents, the tie that binds them cannot be undone. Will they find their way back to one another, or will it be too late? (from: commingsoon.net)

My opinion:

First of all I have to say that I did not read the book, and I also don’t have the intention to do so. This review is only based on the movie.
This movie is a typical love story and thus it was pretty predictable. The first five minutes into the movie and I already knew how it is going to end. What I also found really strange was the ending. Without giving too much away I must say, the ending is just so sudden that I asked myself whether this could be realistic or not. But nevertheless I actually really enjoyed the movie. The plot itself was good, but it wasn’t outstanding.
What I really loved about the movie though were the characters. They were all very honest and authentic. Another reason to watch this movie is the acting, which was incredibly good. Lily Collins was perfect as Rosie and also Sam Claflin portrayed his character very well.

Conclusion:

All in all it's a nice love story with great actors! It is something for everyone who loves romance movies, but I recommend this movie for people 14+ years.

Cover:

The cover looks really beautiful. You can see the protagonist on it and it really suits the story. Also the metallic-look makes it look much better, and kind of alien-like.

My opinion:

This was my first Sci-Fi read ever and I only bought it (once again) because I heard a lot of good things about it on the internet. And once more, I am so happy that I got this book!
At the beginning the book is really confusing and I had a hard time getting used to the writing style. The author jumps around in time (Past, Present) but after the first 100 pages I got used to that rather quickly. What I loved the most about this book was that the author wrote the story in the different point of views. I loved the different voices and characters. However, Cassie annoyed me a little bit. A lot of things which she did just didn’t seem logical to me. The other characters were all great though, especially Evan. :)
 

Conclusion:

A great Alien book with a lot of action, entertainment and a little bit of romance.

Smart, charming, beautiful, Étienne has it all...including a serious girlfriend.

Cover:

The cover I chose for this review is by far the most beautiful one of the covers for this book. It is simple, yet really beautiful. The colors match, and the Eiffel tower at the back suits the story perfectly!

My opinion:

I bought this book mainly because I have heard a lot of good things about it on YouTube. And I have to say, I’m not disappointed! Normally I don’t read such contemporary love-stories, but this book is one of the highlights for me this year.

The story itself is a very typical love story full of romance, sadness and plot-twists. Although the story was kind of slow at some points, the author still was able to grab my attention. The writing-style was fluent and perfect for a quick read-through. However, the characters were the best part of this book. They were all so lovable, but the best of all (of course) was Étienne. He was so nice and thoughtful and his present was just so adorable. ( I don’t wanna give away too much ;) ) But also Anna was a great protagonist. Another reason why I loved this book so much was the setting. I love France and Paris especially.

Conclusion:

A beautiful love story in the most romantic city of the whole world. Definitely a book for everyone, also for people who don’t like contemporary novels.

The Mortal Instruments as a TV-show?

A lot of you might have heard it already. 

The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare will become a TV-show. 

Whilst a lot of people approve of this idea, others really don’t. In this part I will share my opinion on this topic with you.

First of all I’m a huge fan of the TMI series, and I am really happy about the news. There are just so many more opportunities for the producers to stay true to the books. If they would have continued making movies, they would have had to leave out a lot of details and maybe also characters from the movies, but now they can include everything in the series. If you look at the movie adaptation of “City of Bones” there are a few things which they have changed, and a lot of people might not have been happy with this. A TV-series is definitely a better solution for this.

Rumor has it that also the actors will be recasted for the TV-show. A lot of people already got used to the “old” actors from the movie and so they are not happy about that there will be new ones. For me this is totally fine. A few characters didn’t look like the people I had in mind, and I think it is positive that they choose new actors. We don’t know yet who the actors are going to be, and how they will act, so I think that we should look forward to it.

If they stay true to the books, the TV-series will definitely be a success and I really look forward to more news about it!

The cover is just beautiful. The man on the cover looks exactly how I pictured Will Herondale. Also, the colors on the book are very nice.

My opinion:

At first I couldn’t really imagine a story in the world of TID. I read The Mortal Instruments first and I was worried that it is going to be the same, just with different characters. Oh, how wrong I have been!
The story was thrilling from page one on, up to the last. I laughed, I cried and I was shocked - everything what you expect from a Cassandra Clare book. The characters were amazing! I loved every single one of them. They were so well described and all so lovable, also if they seemed bad at first. Especially Tessa is a great character, just because she loves books as much as I do! But also Will and Jem were so lovable, that you couldn’t choose between them!
Until now I enjoy this series so much more than TMI!

Conclusion:

A great first part of the trilogy! I cannot wait to read the next books! I recommend this book to everyone who is interested in the shadowhunter world or fantasy in general.

The cover is beautiful and it suits the story perfectly. The heart shows their love, but the thorns could symbolize something forbidden, which basically is the topic of the book.
I love it & I think it couldn’t have been made any better.

My opinion:

Where should I start? – This definitely is my new favorite book.

The book is fantastic, and the writing style is absolutely great. You can really feel, live and suffer with the characters. Another thing which I really liked, was that the author didn’t throw you into the situation of the couple straight away. The relationship and the story were slowly built up as the story progressed.

Let’s move on to the characters. I never suffered with any characters more than with the ones in this book. I loved every single one of them, and to read about their destinies was just touching. Although the reader knows, that what the couple goes through is actually forbidden, you still feel that it’s the right thing to do.
I never cried more when reading a book. The ending of this story made me sad and angry at the same time, and when I think back to it I still start to cry. This book was so touching that I will probably have to wait a few days with starting a new book.

Conclusion:

A wonderful love story full of romance and tragedy. It is definitely my favorite out of the books I have read so far this year, if not my favourite book of all time!
